Precision spraying is not a marketing line. In blind trials, it consistently cuts pesticide use by 40-60% with equal or better outcomes. The mechanism: three technologies working together — variable rate application (VRA), section control, and AI weed recognition.
Variable Rate Application (VRA) means the sprayer dispenses different volumes across the same parcel depending on crop status. Instead of a uniform 2 L/ha, VRA applies 0.8 L/ha in healthy zones, 2.5 L/ha in heavily pressured zones, and 0 L/ha where the target species is absent. It requires a crop-status map from a drone or satellite image.
Section control works at another level — it automatically shuts off sprayer segments when they pass over already-treated area (headlands, corners) or over non-crop surfaces (roads, buffer strips). In Serbia, where parcels are fragmented and often irregular, section control alone cuts consumption by 8-15%.
AI weed recognition is the most advanced layer. Cameras mounted on the sprayer capture 30 frames per second, and a machine-learning model decides whether the pixel is crop or weed. If it is a weed, a microvalve opens and treats only that exact patch. See-and-spray systems (John Deere See & Spray, Bosch BASF Smart Spraying) can reduce herbicide use by up to 90% in ideal conditions.
What this means for a Serbian farmer:
- Direct savings: 40-60 EUR per hectare per year on herbicides and insecticides.
- Soil health: fewer residues in the upper layers, restored microflora, better long-term structure.
- Price premium: major off-takers (EU buyers, Nestle, Danone) pay premiums for low-residue produce.
- EU regulatory alignment: the Farm to Fork strategy mandates a 50% pesticide cut by 2030. Non-adopters will lose EU market access.
A pragmatic path: you do not need to buy everything at once. A section-control retrofit kit for an existing sprayer costs 2,500-4,000 EUR and pays back in one season on a 30-ha farm. That is a sensible first step — add a VRA controller next year, and if you scale, a See & Spray module after that.
